On October 4, 1957, a polished metal sphere the size of a beach ball began circling the Earth, transmitting a simple radio pulse. Anyone with a shortwave set could hear it. Nothing about the world was the same afterward.
Eighty-three kilograms that changed the map
Sputnik 1 did almost nothing: it orbited, and it beeped. But the beep was the point. Broadcast at frequencies amateur radio operators used every day, it meant any teenager with a receiver could personally verify that a Soviet machine was passing overhead — over Kansas, over London, over everywhere — once every 96 minutes. No press release required, no way to deny it. The sphere itself burned up within three months, but by then it had already done its work on the ground.
The panic that built an agency
In the United States the reaction was close to panic — if a rocket could put a satellite over your head, it could put other things there too. The response reshaped a country: within a year, Explorer 1 flew (and made the first space discovery, the Van Allen radiation belts), NASA was created, and money poured into science education. The space race was never only about space; it was two superpowers proving out, in public, the most advanced technology either possessed. That urgency — embarrassing, expensive, productive — compressed decades of progress into one.
The four-year sprint
What followed Sputnik came absurdly fast by any later standard: first animal in orbit within a month, first probes to hit and photograph the Moon within two years, and on April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to orbit the Earth — a flight lasting 108 minutes that made him, briefly, the most famous person alive.
