How to Read a Launch

T-minus, holds, MECO, GO polls — a launch broadcast has its own language. Learn it once and every countdown becomes a story you can follow.

The clock that stops

T-minus is simply time until liftoff — but unlike an ordinary clock, it is allowed to stop. A 'hold' freezes the count while engineers work an issue or wait for weather; many missions build planned holds into the schedule as breathing room. When you see T-0 slip on our schedule, that's usually a hold or a new launch window, not a failure. 'Scrub' means today's attempt is over; rockets are patient.

A launch in five beats

Nearly every mission follows the same skeleton. Liftoff. Max-Q, the moment of heaviest aerodynamic stress, when the vehicle throttles down briefly as it punches through the thickest air. MECO — main engine cutoff — followed by stage separation, the first stage's job done. Second engine start, the long gentle burn that does most of the sideways work from the last lesson. And finally SECO and payload deploy, the quiet radio call that means a new machine is in orbit.

GO polls and what 'nominal' means

Before launch you'll hear a poll: each console answers GO or NO-GO, one system at a time. It's the most honest moment in engineering — any single voice can stop the flight. And when commentators keep saying 'nominal', they aren't being bland: in flight-test language, nominal means exactly as planned, and it is the best word a rocket can hear.

Our schedule mirrors this language. 'Go' means the provider has confirmed the attempt. 'TBC' and 'TBD' mean the window isn't final. A red 'Failure' is recorded plainly when it happens — spaceflight includes its bad days, and honest records are how the industry learns.
