How Do You Become an Astronaut?

It's the most oversubscribed job on (and off) Earth: thousands apply for every seat. But the actual path is more knowable than the mystique suggests — and it's changing shape right now.

The odds, honestly

Space agencies publish their numbers, and they're bracing: NASA's 2021 selection drew over 12,000 applicants for 10 places; ESA's 2022 round drew about 22,500 for a similar handful. That's an acceptance rate that makes elite universities look easy. But the pool self-selects hard, and the baseline requirements are earthly: a strong degree in science, engineering, math, or medicine, years of responsible experience — test pilot, doctor, researcher, engineer — and passing a long medical. No single résumé wins; recent classes mix fighter pilots with biologists, and the common thread is people who perform calmly when things break.

Years before the rocket

Selection is the beginning, not the end. Candidates spend roughly two years in basic training — flying jets to practice split-second decision-making, learning Station systems, robotics, and languages — before they're eligible for a flight assignment, and then train two more years for the specific mission. The famous part is the pool: spacewalks are rehearsed in a giant tank holding a full-size Station mockup, at a ratio of about seven hours underwater for every hour planned outside. By launch day, an astronaut has typically rehearsed their mission so many times that colleagues describe the real thing as 'the best run of the sim'.

More doors than ever

The honest footnote: the seat count is small and the wait can be long — some astronauts wait a decade between selection and first flight. But the doors are multiplying. Commercial crew vehicles fly private missions with working scientists aboard; new stations are planned; and the professional corps now hires more regularly than in the Shuttle era. The advice every astronaut gives is the same, and it's sound even if the rocket never comes: pick work you'd love anyway — the flying, the science, the medicine — so that the worst case is a life you chose. The best case leaves the planet.
